Home Cost of Downtime Implementing IIoT Presents Challenges and Opportunities

The promise of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is inspiring customers to think big in the long term, but in the short term, implementing IIoT solutions is proving more challenging than many expected.

Bain & Company recently followed up on a survey of high-tech executives from a couple of years ago to see if their predictions and aspirations around IIoT have come to fruition.

Two years ago, industrial customers were most interested in the potential of predictive maintenance to identify equipment on the verge of failure and avoid costly downtime. In the recent survey, enthusiasm has cooled, mainly because implementation has been more difficult than expected and the value of data was less than hoped for.

Unfortunately, predictive maintenance was not the only IIoT use case that has proven to be more difficult to implement than originally expected, mainly due to integration with existing OT and IT systems. However, the long-term outlook is still positive. Developments like edge computing, 5G connectivity and the proliferation of connected devices are inspiring confidence in the ability to increase efficiency in the next 5 to 8 years. To reach these anticipated increases in efficiency, end customers will need support from vendors in specific areas. In particular, customers are most focused on security, data portability and IT/OT integration.

While implantation has been more challenging in some respects, there are certain use cases that are both high priority for customers and where vendors have the expertise to deploy now. One use case that ranked highly was remote equipment monitoring. Another was quality control. Energy management for smart buildings also ranked highly.

Stratus is uniquely positioned to support these use cases with the ztC Edge, a zero-touch, fully virtualized and self-protecting computing platform. The ztC Edge has built-in remote management and self-monitoring features that reduce the IT burden for industrial edge environments.
