ARC Advisory Group recently released a market report exploring the increasing awareness and attention around the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). They gauged the industry’s readiness and perception of edge infrastructure and how the ability to access, analyze, and process data is central to the IIoT value proposition.
With staggering growth, applications and machines are increasingly becoming party of a network of sophisticated connectivity enabling the more efficient and rapid collection,analysis and exchange of data. This proliferation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is about to revolutionize manufacturing and automation as it enables the accessibility of far greater amounts of data, at far greater speeds.
The report found that over 50% of respondents see a mix of both edge infrastructure and cloud investment for their organizations, with approximately one quarter investing more heavily in edge computing resources, and only 17%skewed more toward the cloud. The majority of respondents expect to deploy real-time analytics capabilities on premise and as close to the manufacturing process as possible.
- 30% expect to perform data analytics at the edge, and slightly fewer at the plant floor level
- 58% of users interviewed would not want to use the cloud as an intermediary nor have it reside in the data center
- 18% of respondents would kick the analytical function up a level to the data center
